Mercer Cruises Past Alabama A&M, 65-46

MACON, Ga (School Release). - Mercer junior Daniel Coursey booked a double-figure scoring total for the second-straight game as the men's basketball team posted a 65-46 win over Alabama A&M on Saturday night at Hawkins Arena.

Mercer improved to 4-0 at home this season and 5-5 overall, while Alabama A&M slipped to 2-5 on the season and 0-4 in road contests.

Coursey scored his team-high 14 points on six-of-10 shooting, while also pacing the Bears with seven rebounds.  All told, 11 of Mercer's 14 suited players scored in the victory, helping the Bears' bench outscore the Bulldogs' reserves 26-5.

As a team, Mercer also tallied a season-high 18 assists in the win, led by junior Bud Thomas' six helpers.  Junior point guards Kevin Canevari and Langston Hall each added three assists.

Just over a minute into the game, the score was knotted at 2-2 tie before Mercer dialed up three-pointers on three of its next four possessions to stake an early 11-4 advantage.  At the 9:06 juncture, Mercer's lead had swelled to 11 (17-6) when Alabama A&M began a 7-1 charge to come within five with 4:35 left before half.

The Orange and Black finished the half on a high note, ending the stanza on a 9-2 run capped by Thomas' old-fashioned three-point play that sent Mercer to the locker room on top, 27-15.

Mercer kept clicking offensively out of the break, scoring on five of its first six possessions to push the lead to 38-20.  From there, the Bulldogs wouldn't close any closer than 15 points the rest of the way.

Senior guard Travis Smith chipped in eight points while his classmate Chris Smith netted six.  Thomas' seven points came in conjunction with six rebounds, six assists and one block.

Mercer returns to action after a week hiatus at Chattanooga on December 16.  Game time against the Mocs is scheduled for 3 p.m.
