Central Georgians Launch Kwanzaa Wednesday | News

Central Georgians kick off Kwanzaa Wednesday night.

The Kwanzaa Cultural Access Center, Inc. and Torchlight Academy, Inc. are sponsoring the 21st annual Kwanzaa series in Macon starting Dec. 26. 

Kwanzaa is an African-American cultural holiday festival that emphasizes a different community value each night.

The list of events are as follows:

Umoja - Wednesday, Dec. 26, 7 p.m. at the Historic Douglass Theatre located at 355 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd - traditional Kwanzaa ceremony, live drum circle and African dance, film, puppetry, live music and more

Kujichaguila - Thursday, Dec. 27, 7 p.m. at the Historic Douglass Theatre - youth night live talent diversity event of self-determination

Ujima - Friday, Dec. 28, Ujima Service Day of Love, Caring and Community Outreach with morning and afternoon partnerships and special events - location TBA for the 7 p.m. Ujima Evening Celebration with refreshments and the black business showcase

Ujamma - Saturday, Dec. 29 - Ujamaa Economic Unity Day for black economic empowerment, purchasing from black businesses and developing a plan for your own economic empowerment for 2013 - More details TBA

Nia - Sunday, Dec. 30, 5 p.m. - Night of Purpose at Tubman African American Museum located at 340 Walnut Street - film, spoken word, live music, visual arts, featuring international celebrity poet Queen Sheba - $5 advance, $7 at the door

Kuumba - Monday, Dec. 31, 5 p.m. - Community Karamu (Kwanzaa Feast) at Homeland Village located at 2910 Napier Ave. - special tribute and screening of Bob Marley documentary

Imani - Tuesday, January 1 - Imani reflections, self-examination and personal reassessment with family
