Mercer Gets Help From Gollon
News

In his fourth season with Mercer, Jakob Gollon continues to provide leadership on the floor.

"On the floor he's like another coach basically," said junior point guard Langston Hall.  "He's always talking, always leading by example and he always plays as hard as he can."

Gollon spent his first two seasons working back from a foot and hand injury.  Now he fills several rolls on the team.

"He's just a do it all kind of guy," said head coach Bob Hoffman.  "He's just a jack of all trades.  He's just going to try to find a way to win."

Those redshirt years gave the Stevens Point, Wisconsin native the chance to develop his knowledge of the game.

"I also took a lot of time learning the game mentally," explained Gollon.  "Coach helped me out a lot.  We run a really complex offense and I've kind of gotten to know all of it, the in's and out's of what we need to do.  I've really developed my "IQ" over those two years also."

Coach Hoffman has a balanced team and Gollon says that is one of their biggest strengths.

"We're a very well rounded team," said Gollon. "We don't have one star player.  What we pride ourselves in is our depth and the amount of guys on our team that can come and drop buckets any given night."

Gollon does not expect to be the big name on the roster, or light up the scoreboard every night.  For him, it is about something else.

"He's going to give all he has to the team and the program no matter what, if he's the leading scorer or if he's not.  He just wants to win."

"There's just something about the competitive spirit within me that, especially with it having been taken away from me those few years when I was hurt... ... It's one of those things where you don't really know what you've got until you lose it for a little bit."

Jake and the rest of the Mercer Bears start conference play on Monday at Hawkins Arena against Stetson.  Tip-off is slated for 4:30 p.m.
