Macon Police Investigate Deadly Wreck
News

A man was killed early Sunday morning when the car he was driving struck a pole on Mercer University Drive.

Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones says 39-year-old David Coley was speeding in a 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS when it crashed into a street light in front of the Department of Labor building near Columbus Road.

Jones says the car did not belong to Coley and the driver carried no identification. Coley was trapped inside the car and died at the scene.

When Carlos Sledge, who owns the car, received a phone call at 5:30 a.m, it was about the state of his Impala.

"They were saying I was involved in an accident and I said, no I'm at home in the bed," he says.

His car was in the accident; it was another man at the wheel.

Sledge says his car was supposed to be at an East Macon repair shop, a place he frequents often. "The car was being repaired and I guess they were test driving it or whatever."

Sledge says he did not know Coley and has no idea how or why Coley was driving his car.

"We can get another car, but the most important thing is what about the family that's suffering because we have a life gone," he says.
