Mercer Looks to Rebound on Wednesday against FGCU

MACON, Ga. (School Release)- The Mercer women's basketball team looks to recapture its home court advantage when it welcomes Florida Gulf Coast into town on Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. at Hawkins Arena.

After starting the season 4-0 at home, Mercer has dropped its last two contests in Hawkins Arena. The Bears have had success at home this season due to their defensive effort in front of the Mercer faithful, allowing opponents to score just 55.8 points per game.

Scouting the Opposition

FGCU (8-5, 1-0 A-Sun) has won four of its last five games entering Wednesday's match-up with Mercer. The Eagles won their A-Sun Conference opener at Kennesaw State last time out, 62-35, thanks to a stellar defensive that held Kennesaw State to 31 percent shooting from the field for the game. FGCU already has an A-Sun best three Top-100 RPI wins this season over Virginia Tech, Richmond and LSU. The Eagles are led by junior Sarah Hansen, who leads the A-Sun Conference with 17.5 points per game and ranks fourth in the league averaging 7.8 rebounds per contest.

Last Time Out

The Mercer women's basketball team suffered through a tough 74-41 defeat in its A-Sun Conference opener against Stetson on Dec. 31 at Hawkins Arena. Mercer was done in by a scoreless streak of more than 6:30 from the end of the first half to the beginning of the second half that afforded Stetson a chance to pull away for the win. Junior Kendra Grant was the only Mercer player in double figures with 15 points while classmate Sharnea Boykin handed out a game-high eight assists. Midway through the first half, Mercer trailed just 15-13 before Stetson earned points on four-straight possessions to go in front 26-15 with 9:00 left. Mercer battled back to close within seven, but the Hatters scored the final nine points of the stanza to take a 37-21 lead into halftime. Stetson stayed hot after the break and scored the first seven points of the second half to assume control for the remainder of the game.

Game Notes

- Junior Kendra Grant's 15-point outing against Stetson was her team leading 10th double figure scoring game of the season. Sophomore Precious Bridges is next in line on the Bears with seven double-digit scoring efforts in 2012-13.
