West Macon Next to Get New Fire Station | News
Fire Chief Marvin Riggins joined county commissioners Thursday afternoon to reveal the location of the county's newest fire station.
That's Fire station 110 on Heath Road just north of Columbus Road. Bibb County Commission Chairman Sam Hart says the county bought the 4.5 acres at 2930 Heath Road with $238,000 of penny sales tax dollars.
It's money well spent if you ask Susan Dowell, who lives across the street from the location.
"It makes you feel safer," she said.
She's especially grateful after a yard fire threatened her home.
"It took them a while to get here-- my daughter had called them several times because she was so worried that it took a while," said Dowell.
Her closest station is 106 on Price Road close to Thomaston Road. Fire Chief Marvin Riggins says the response time is within five minutes, but backup could take 8 minutes.
"The second closest station to that particular area has to come from the Macon Mall. We need to enhance that, and we recognize that," said Riggins.
He says fire station 110 would drastically improve response times and the area's fire insurance rating. It's the second of three stations funded with 12 million dollars from the 2011 penny sales tax. Station 109 is under construction in North Macon.
Hart says they're pushing to get the penny tax projects set up before city and county governments consolidate.
"We're trying to put as much as we can in place to make sure that we respond to the voters in a timely fashion so if this penny comes up again they feel very good about it and are more likely to support it," he said.
Hart says they'll look for an architect for the new station next week.
