Reichert Supports Tougher Gun Control Laws
News

Macon Mayor Robert Reichert threw his support behind President Barack Obama's plans for tougher gun control.

The mayor recently returned from a national mayor's conference in Washington, D.C., where gun control was a hot topic.

Reichert especially favors the President's proposal for consistent background checks for all gun buyers.

"What good does it do if you go buy a firearm from a licensed dealer, you have to go through a background check," Reichert said Wednesday. "But if you go to the gun show, you don't have a background check."

The mayor expressed concerns over person-to-person gun sales.

"If you buy a gun from another individual, you don't have to have a background check. Well, what good does it do to have a background check if you're not requiring everybody to do it," he said.

Reichert is among more than 800 mayors around the nation who belong to a group called Mayors Against Illegal Guns. He said their goal is to make sure only law-abiding and mentally compentent citizens own weapons.

He calls President Obama's proposal on gun control a common sense approach to a complicated problem.

Acknowledging the National Rifle Association has criticized the President's proposals, Reichert said they can all agree on keeping firearms out of the wrong hands.

"I think the NRA and most members of the NRA would acknowledge and be in favor of the restrictions that we have placed on the Second Amendment, such as you can't sell a weapon to a convicted felon. You can't sell a weaon to a person who has been adjudicated as mentally defective. You can't sell a weapon to someone who's been convicted of domestic abuse," Reichert said.

The mayor also says there should be tougher federal penalties when someone buys a gun for a convicted felon. He finds it equally disturbing when someone buys several guns then sells them to someone without knowing where those guns will end up.
