Mercer Prepares for Second Signing Day Class | News
Wednesday, the Mercer Bears football team will add a few more players to the roster. The Bears are halfway through their practice year and will start play in the Pioneer League this fall.
On August 31, the Bears will play their first football game in 70 years. Bobby Lamb was named the 19th football head coach at Mercer in July 2011. Now, he only has a few months before the Bears line up against another team for the first time.
Mercer does not offer football scholarships, so signing day is a little different for the Bears.
Student-athletes can announce their intentions to play at MU, but it is not official until they pay the deposit for school.
Lamb says this year's recruiting class is a smaller, more focused group.
"Last year, it was just a deluge. We signed 104 total. This year we've narrowed our focus a little more. We've narrowed our focus and catered to a better athlete, a better player," said Lamb.
"Instead of signing six quarterbacks like we did last year, we're only signing two. So we can narrow our focus and recruiting efforts into those certain positions."
Mercer hosts Reinhardt on August 31.
