UPDATE: Flooding Closes Riverwalk

The riverwalk along the Ocmulgee River in Macon has closed due to rising waters.

Macon's Director of Public Affairs Chris Floore tells 13WMAZ that the entire Ocmulgee Heritage Trail is now closed to the public.

"We anticipate it remaining closed until at least Saturday, and it could be longer depending on how quickly the water recedes and the amount of clean up required," Floore said.

Meteorologist David Ernst from the 13WMAZ Weather Center said, "As of 12:00 p.m. Tuesday the Ocmulgee's official reading was at 17.5 ft., that's a half foot shy of flood stage. It should hit 18 ft. Tuesday afternoon and crest Thursday morning, just under 20 ft."

The highest level that the river hit in recent years was in November 2009. That's when the Ocmulgee River at Macon reached 24.26 ft., according to historical data.
