Mercer Village Celebrates Fat Tuesday

Central Georgians looking to enjoy Mardi Gras festivities didn't have to travel to New Orleans.

Businesses at Mercer Village added cajun style food, decorations, and Mardi Gras beads to Tuesday's activities in the College Hill Corridor.

The restaurants offered specials and lowered prices on Mardi Gras based items.

People from all over turned out for the festivities, even after finding out that a planned Mardi Gras parade had been cancelled due to rain.

Sherry Canipe, a teacher at Woodfield Elementary in Macon, says Fat Tuesday is a great time to teach her class about the true meaning of Mardi Gras.

"We came out Today to let them see what it was and experience it just a little bit. We have learned what the beads are for and what it leads up to, which is Lent," said Canipe.

Others, like Gayle Tungate of Macon, enjoyed the sights, sounds and food with family.

She said, "It's just been great. The atmosphere is wonderful.  Everybody is happy and it's good to see smiling faces."
