The Macon Film Festival kicked off its eighth year Thursday afternoon. Around 87 movies will be screened over four days at the Cox Capital Theater, Douglas Theater and 567 Cener for Renewal.

But for Marcus Sullivan, a student from Ottawa, Canada, this is his first film festival as a filmmaker. His movie "The Suicide Kid" will hit the screen Friday afternoon.

"What attracted us to this one is that there was a student category and in particular they accepted student features, which is our niche that we ultimately fell into so Macon was one of the few that accepted student features," said Sullivan.

The premise of his movie is a university freshman who starts a video blog on YouTube that takes a dark turn.

"Various circumstances in his life lead him to a suicide attempt that he films and the failed suicide attempt because a viral YouTube sensation, and so he becomes a viral video star. And his whole life changes, and we see how through his video blogs the affect of online stardom," said Sullivan.

Terrell Sandefur said it's films like Sullivan's and others from across country and around the world.

"When we first started we really were focused on Southern films," said Sandefur. "Now our special screens are coming in from wherever we chose they don't have to be anything to do with Macon or the state of Georgia."

Sandefur said what makes the Macon Film Festival stand out is that it focuses on those behind the scenes.

"We are known as a filmmakers film festival. A lot of filmmakers focus on their stars. We have special guests that come in, but our real focus are the filmmakers in action that have submitted and that have come to our festival," said Sandefur.

Sandefur says there are not only more films, but the quality is better. He said their ticket sales increase on average 30 percent each year.
