TOWSON, Md. (School Release) - The Mercer men's lacrosse team dropped a 9-8 decision in overtime to Towson on Sunday afternoon at Unitas Stadium. Freshman attackman Chris Baxa led the team with four goals in the losing effort. Mercer's loss dropped the team to 1-2 on the season while Towson moved to 1-3.
Trailing 5-3 in the third period, Baxa dialed up his third goal of the afternoon with 4:18 on the clock, sparking a streak of five unanswered goals that put the Bears in front, 8-5 with 9:22 to play. From there, the Tigers responded with three goals in a matter of 40 seconds to knot the score at 8-8.
After time expired, Towson junior attackman Thomas DeNapoli netted the game winner with 1:04 left in the first overtime period to secure the Tigers' victory. Each team recorded one shot in the overtime period.
Mercer junior attackman Zack Ward posted a pair of goals in the loss, while junior midfielder Harry Baker and freshman attackman Timmy Geran each added one.
Mercer freshman Mike Nugent made 11 saves while playing the entire game between the pipes. He also tallied a team-high five ground balls to help the Bears finish with a 34-33 edge in the category.
Mercer returns to action at St. Josephs on March 6. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
