Sequestration Could Affect Middle Georgia Regional Airport | News

Sequester cuts have begun, and they may hit close to home for Central Georgia.

According to an article in the Federal Times, the Federal Aviation Administration could furlough "the vast majority" of air traffic controllers.

No cuts have been officially made at Middle Georgia Regional Airport, but there is a plan to adjust, if necessary.

"If the tower were to close here at Middle Georgia Regional Airport, we would still run as an airport," said Douf Faour, Middle Georgia Regional Airport Director. "It would operate in a non-towered environment, meaning there would be no air traffic controllers, and the aircraft would control themselves and separate themselves."

The only airline that operates from the airport, Georgia Skies, runs two flights a day in and out of Macon.

Its replacement, Silver Airlines, is scheduled to start offering flights from the airport in April, regardless of sequestration.
