Harlem Globetrotter Visits Ingram-Pye to Share Anti-Bullying Message | News
By Daniel Daniels, Bibb County School District Intern
On Monday, March 11, Ingram-Pye Elementary School hosted a world famous athlete. Herbert “Flight Time” Lang of the Harlem Globetrotters visited the school to deliver the Globetrotters' message, “The ABC’s of Bullying Prevention.” The program was designed with the aid of the National Campaign to Stop Violence with the goal of reducing bullying among youth in schools.
Flight Time, an Arkansas native, has made appearances on such TV shows as The Amazing Race, Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?, and the Disney program Kickin’ It.
Flight Time used humor and his exceptional basketball handling skills to entertain the students in attendance.
“The ABC’s of Bullying Prevention” is an acronym for Action, Bravery, and Compassion. Flight Time told the students that you take action by telling a teacher if you witness bullying. He stressed that it is very important to tell a teacher if you witness a fellow student being bullied. He said that being brave doesn’t necessarily mean fighting a bully. Instead, bravery can come from the actions of a student standing up for a fellow student who may be the target of bullying.
Finally, Flight Time told the Ingram-Pye community that they can exhibit compassion by inviting a victim of bullying to join their friends. He told the students to “make a friend.”
Toward the end of the assembly, Flight Time took questions from students. One student asked Flight Time, “How many games have you won?”
Flight Time told the student, “In 14 years, I don’t know how many games I won, but I know how many I lost; zero.”
