Ficklin, Schlesinger face off in District 2 again

For the third time in four months, people in Macon's District 2 will vote on a county commission race.

Today, voters in the district are expected to settle a runoff between Henry Ficklin and Laurence Schlesinger, both former Macon city council members.

Schlesinger topped the voting in a September vote that eliminated a third candidate, Paul Bronson.

Then Schlesinger also apparently won an October runoff against Ficklin by 26 votes.

But both elections were plagued by district-line errors that resulted in some people casting votes in the wrong commission races.

In November, a judge ordered a new runoff after Ficklin challenged the results. He argued that dozens of people who live in District 2 could not cast votes in the runoff.

Polls are open today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The board of elections says 400 people voted in the six days' early voting.

Voting happens only at the four District 2 polling places: River Edge on Emery Highway; Memorial Park Gym on Long Street, Bruce Elementary on Houston Avenue; North Macon Park on North Macon Park Avenue; Northeast High School, Upper River Road; Pentacostal Temple, Anthony Road.

And only people who live in District 2 can vote -- regardless of whether they've voted in the previous elections.

Anyone with a question about their district or polling place should call the board of elections at (478) 621-6622.
