Bibb County Middle School Math Team Competition

The district’s Middle School Math Team Competition will be held at Ballard-Hudson Middle on Thursday, March 10 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Students individually answer 40 questions in an hour, and the team competition consists of 10 questions to answer in 15 minutes. This year, a new Speed Round will be part of the competition. A question will be shown on the screen and students will have 45 seconds to buzz in with the correct answer. The school with the most points after 10 minutes will win the Speed Round competition.

Mount de Sales Academy Seniors Named as Finalists in National Merit Scholarship Program

Mount de Sales Academy announces that two students have been named finalists in the National Merit Scholarship program. 

Finalists are selected based on PSAT scores earned during the junior year, a complete transcript of grades and SAT test scores, school recommendations, and a student essay.  

Of the some 1.5 million program entrants, only approximately 15,000 are considered in the finalist category.

William Underwood, son of Bill and Lesli Underwood, and Katy Hutto, daughter of Rick and Katherine Hutto, are among this highly selective national group.  Each will be considered for National Merit Scholarships to be announced in April, 2011.

Mount de Sales Academy Student Chosen as 2011 Bibb County STAR Student Recipient

Mount de Sales Academy senior Katy Hutto was selected as the 2011 PAGE STAR Student for Bibb County, and College Counselor and English teacher Benjamin Rollins was selected as the 2011 STAR Teacher. 

This is the 3rd consecutive year that a Mount de Sales Academy senior has claimed the Bibb County STAR Student award. Katy will now move on to compete in the STAR Regions level. 

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program focuses attention on Georgia’s outstanding high school students and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development and is coordinated by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) in association with the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education.

“The Arts at Work” is the theme of the 2011 Macon State College Arts Festival scheduled for March 14-16.

All events are in the Macon Campus theater or the rehearsal hall, both located in the Arts Complex, and are free and open to the public.

Northeast High Teacher Named Top 10 Finalist for Ga. Teacher of the Year

The Georgia Department of Education has named Northeast High School teacher and Bibb County Teacher of the Year a Top 10 Finalist in the Georgia Teacher of the Year Program.

“Being named a Finalist for the Georgia Teacher of the Year is an unimaginable honor,” says Mr. McCarthy. “I am a product of Jones Elementary, Appling Middle, and Northeast High, and it was there that I received the foundation that has become the bedrock of all that I am and will become.”

“Mr. McCarthy is truly deserving of this recognition because of the positive academic impact he has on the students at Northeast High School, and we wish him the best of luck as he continues through this process,” says Superintendent of Schools Dr. Romain Dallemand. “I know he will represent us well at the state level because he is already a great representative of Northeast High School, his community, and all the teachers, administrators, and support staff in the Bibb County School District.”

Arbor Day Foundation Recognizes Macon State College

Macon State College has earned Tree Campus USA recognition for 2010 for its dedication to campus forestry management and environmental stewardship, the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation announced.

This is the third year Macon State has been named a Tree Campus USA.

That's according to an Arbor Day Foundation news release.

Tree Campus USA is a national program that honors colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy management of their campus forests and for engaging the community in environmental stewardship.

Tree Campus USA is a program of the Arbor Day Foundation and is supported by a grant from Toyota.
