Macon State College Announces Black History Month Activities

Macon State College’s 2011 Black History Month activities will feature the chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation and a look into the history of jazz. Both events are free and open to the public.

Marquetta L. Goodwine, officially known as Queen Quet, chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, will present a program on the Gullah/Geechee people at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, in the Arts Complex Theater at Macon State College.

The Gullah are African Americans who live in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina and Georgia, which includes both the coastal plain and the Sea Islands. The Gullah people and their language are also called Geechee, a Macon State College news release says.

The Gullah are known for preserving more of their African linguistic and cultural heritage than any other African-American community in the United States. Queen Quet is a published author, computer scientist, mathematician, historian, and preservationist.

First Presbyterian Day School Wins Robotics Competition

First Presbyterian Day School Wins Robotics Competition

Students from the First Presbyterian Day School in Macon, GA hold the First Place Trophy they won at the STARBASE ROBINS FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League Regional Robotics Tournament at the Museum of Aviation January 8, 2011. 

The group beat out 36 other teams at the Museum which was the location of one of three regional tournaments held in Georgia.

The team also won an award for Best Robot Performance.

The FPD Day School “Team Red” will now compete at the FIRST Lego League State Tournament to be held at Georgia Tech on January 29, 2011. 

This year’s tournament theme was Body Forward which focuses on medicine. 

Students competed in three rounds of competition with a robot they built themselves to complete tasks on a large competition board. 

They also gave two presentations about medical research to a panel of judges.

Windsor Academy Earns SAIS-SACS Accreditation

Windsor Academy of Macon, Georgia is now an accredited member of the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).  

To earn accreditation from SAIS and SACS, Windsor complied with quality standards, was evaluated by an outside group of peer professionals, and implemented a school plan focused on strategic improvement and student performance. 

Accreditation is voluntary and must be renewed each year.  In addition, the self-study process and peer review visit must be repeated every five years for continued accreditation.

Bibb County Schools will Open Wednesday

The Bibb County School District, including all schools and departments, will be open on Wednesday, January 12.

All students, faculty, and staff should report at their normal times.

Moving forward, the district will be discussing if and how the two days missed can be made up. This discussion will include:

Once a decision has been reached, it will be announced to all employees and parents in the district via our standard communication methods.

On Monday, January 17, the district will remain closed in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.
