District’s Schools, Athletic Facilities Getting Upgrades

As students and teachers return to their classrooms this month, it will be hard to miss the many changes currently under way or completed at some of the District’s schools. Renovations are either complete or under way at several elementary schools in the district, while many of the high schools are in the process of receiving district-wide athletic facility upgrades. Each of these projects and more are taking place as part of the 2010 Capital Improvement Program.

The Program is funded by an Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST), which is a 1 percent sales tax approved by voters in 2009. Key items included in the Program are the construction of five new elementary schools; new construction and extensive improvements to athletic facilities at all middle and high schools, including field houses at four high schools; improvements to other schools; and improvements in technology.

Westside High School Cross Country Teams Race into New Season

Some of the District’s students got a running start on the school year. Westside High School’s Cross Country team was just one of many teams throughout the district that started preparing for the new season prior to the start of school.

Members of the girls and boys teams met the first week of August to get a jumpstart on training for the season, which begins in early August and runs through October. The teams will compete at 10 meets, with each course being 3.1 miles in length, which is the standard distance for Cross Country in high school.

“They’re running a little bit,” said Coach Dr. Deborah Baber, who coaches boys and girls cross country and girls basketball for the school despite having retired from teaching. “They ran a couple of miles yesterday, a mile this morning, and they’re lifting weights. I’m just trying to ease them into it with this heat.”
