Adrian Johnson Named to Girl Scouts Board

Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, Inc. has elected Adrian Johnson of Macon, Georgia to a position on its board of directors. Johnson will serve a three-year term.

Johnson is a Relationship Manager at Wells Fargo Bank.  He has 21 years of banking experience with Bank of America and Wells Fargo Bank, respectively.

Central Ga. Council, Boy Scouts of America Annual Safari Wild Dinner

The Safari Wild Dinner is an annual Friends of Scouting fundraising event for the Central Georgia Council, Boy Scouts of America.  It will be held March 17, 2011 at the Idle Hour Golf and Country Club in Macon, GA at 7pm.  The keynote speaker for the evening will be Bobby Lamb, Mercer University’s Head Football Coach.
Born in Augusta and raised in Commerce, Bobby Lamb joins the Mercer coaching ranks after nine successful seasons as head coach at Furman University. He will become the 19th head coach in Bears’ football history on July 1st.
 
During his tenure guiding Furman’s program, Lamb had a 67-40 record (.626). He led the Paladins to winning records in eight of his nine   seasons and made four trips to the NCAA I-AA (now Football Championship Series) playoffs. His 2004 squad won the SoCon championship and Lamb was tabbed as the Conference’s “Coach of the Year.”

Macon State College Adopts “Blue Storm” Logo

Macon State College has adopted an identity logo to reflect the new “Blue Storm” mascot chosen last fall.

The logo, designed by a firm that specializes in professional and collegiate athletics sports identity development, features the head of a menacing horse emerging from a background of blue storm clouds. The horse gained favor with a committee of students, faculty, and staff as a tribute to Macon State’s original mascot, the Mustangs.

Joe Bosack Graphic Design Company presented two versions of a Blue Storm logo to the committee. The two versions were posted online and the campus community was invited to give feedback. Of 620 responses, about 55 percent preferred the logo eventually recommended by the committee and approved by Dr. David A. Bell, Macon State’s president. About 33 percent favored the other version. The rest expressed no preference.

Sports Film Series Tips Off with 'Hoosiers'

The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame’s (GSHOF) Spring Sports Film Series begins on Saturday, March 19 with a screening of the classic basketball movie Hoosiers at 2 p.m.  

A GSHOF news release says the film stars Gene Hackman as a coach on the rebound that trains a small town high school basketball team to become a top contender for the championship. 

The film screening, popcorn and a soft drink are included with regular museum admission. 

The film series is made possible in part by a grant from the Macon Arts Alliance and the City of Macon. 

The series will continue in April and May with The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings and Remember the Titans.  Each film will be shown in the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame’s 205 seat, state-of-the-art theater.

Hae San Martial Arts 2011 National Tournament

Ahn's Tae Kwon Do is hosting the Hae San Martial Arts 2011 National Tournament at Westside High School, Saturday, March 12, 2011.

Grandmaster E.C. Ahn, a 9th degree black belt, of Ahn's Tae Kwon Do in Macon is the President and founder of the Hae San Martial Arts Association.

The opening ceremony begins at 10:00 A.M. The tournament will host guests from as far away as Utah, Arizona, Arkansas, Nevada, Florida, and North Carolina. In attendance will be two additional ninth degree black belts, Grandmaster Robert Dunn from North Carolina, and Grandmaster Robert Hardin from Arkansas.The tournament will last all day so any coverage would be greatly appreciated.

Zumba Fundraiser to Benefit Jay's HOPE Foundation

Four Central Georgia licensed Zumba instructors are holding a fundraiser for Jay's HOPE Foundation on Saturday, March 5 at Hephzibah Children's Home at Hephzibah Ministries, Inc. 

Registration for Zumba will be from 9-9:30 a.m. and Zumba will be from 9:30-11 a.m. 

Hephzibah Children's Home is located on Zebulon Rd.

Sports Hall of Fame Inducts 2011 Class

The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame (GSHF) will induct the Class of 2011 on Saturday, February 26 in Macon. 

The class includes Robert Davis, Joe DeLany, Dale Ellis, Ray Goff, Bill Ploeger, Lisa Spain Short and James “J.T.” Thomas

The GSHF FanFest is scheduled from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the GSHF.

Each member of the Class of 2011 as well as over 20 previous hall of fame inductees will be on hand to sign autographs, take pictures and greet their fans. This event is open to the public, and there is no admission charge to visit the museum during FanFest.

 

The 2011 GSHF Induction Ceremony will take place in the evening Saturday, February 26. The event is sold out.

The GSHF is located at 301 Cherry St. in Macon.
