Meeting to Survey South Bibb's Park and Recreation Needs

South Bibb residents are invited to a meeting with Bibb County Commissioner Bert Bivins to discuss parks and recreation needs in the community.

According to a news release, the meeting is slated for Thursday, January 24 at 7 p.m. at the Porter-Ellis Community Center. That's located at 5987 Houston Road.

Suggested topics include:
--What kinds of parks are needed?
--Where would the park(s) be located?
--Would be people want smaller neighborhood parks or one centrally located park?

Connecticut Students Help Repair Macon Homes

Connecticut Students Help Repair Macon Homes

University of Connecticut students are helping repair Macon homes this week.

The twenty-six students traversed the 1,100 miles in 18 hours to help repair homes alongside Rebuilding Macon, according to a news release.

They'll build wheel chair ramps, rebuild stairs, paint and help prepare homes for various weather conditions.

Last year, Rebuilding Macon repaired 340 homes for elderly and disabled homeowners free of charge.

Mercer Announces Marching Band to Join First Football Season

 

MACON, Ga. – Mercer Director of Athletics Jim Cole announced Tuesday that the university has officially approved the formation of a school Marching Band, set to debut in the fall of 2013. Current Mercer Pep Band Director Doug Cowden’s will take over a full-time assignment as Director of Bands, in charge of both the Marching and Pep bands.

Cowden began working with Mercer as director of the university’s pep band in the fall of 2006.  His new title tasks him with the job of recruiting students for formation of band at the start of the 2013-14 school year.

“Putting together a high-level marching band will help in continuing to elevate the esprit de corps within the Mercer athletic community,” Cole said.  “The formation of this unit once again shows our commitment to the many facets of a first class athletic department.”
