Application Deadline for Magnolia St. Soapbox Derby

The Magnolia Street Soapbox Derby takes place on Sunday, April 10, immediately following the Second Sunday brunch concert with Saint Francis.

Today is the deadline for entries.

Racers must be pre-registered and checked in by noon.

The derby begins at 3 p.m. down Magnolia Street, adjacent to Washington Park. Prizes will be given for the fastest car and most creative (People's Choice).

Macon, GA - On July 31, 2010, Allgood, the headlining act from the BRAGG Jam Festival played to a sold out, capacity crowd at the magnificent Cox Capitol Theatre. After the amazing reception they received it was inevitable that they be asked to return to perform once again in Macon. The Cox Capitol Theatre is pleased to announce that they will be taking the stage on Friday, March 18, 2011.

Allgood, originally called Allgood Music Company, was based in Athens, GA from 1988 to 1995. Through eight years of constant touring with ever changing set lists and long improvisational jams, Allgood developed a passionate following of fans. During that time they released four records and played before thousands as they became a fixture at festivals and concerts across the southeast.

“The Arts at Work” is the theme of the 2011 Macon State College Arts Festival scheduled for March 14-16.

All events are in the Macon Campus theater or the rehearsal hall, both located in the Arts Complex, and are free and open to the public.

Cherry Blossom Gift Shop Opens, Pre-Festival Events Begin

The Cherry Blossom Festival gift shop is now open at a new location on 567 Cherry St.

That was announced at a press conference Monday.

The gift shop plans to sell mugs, 2011 festival pins, art prints, and more.

Public hours are from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and will open daily during the festival.

The shop is open until April 1.

At the press conference, Cherry Blossom Festival President and CEO Karen Lambert announced a pre-festival event, "Drink Pink."

The event will debut Cherry Blossom Festival signature cocktails created by local restaurants and bars, Lambert says.

The event is scheduled to take place at the Macon Arts Alliance on Friday, March 4 from 5 until 8 p.m.

The Arts Alliance will host a textile show and display paintings by J. Alan Gibson in the gallery during the event.

Downtown Opens Three New Businesses

Three new businesses will open in Downtown Macon on Friday, March 4.

At 10 a.m., Saturna & Company, PC, CPA will open at 505 Second St. Suite 101.

At 4 p.m., Three Brothers Cheesecake and Sweets will open at 592 Cherry St.

At 7:30 p.m. Element Night Club will open at 425 Cherry St.

Local Children Selected for Touring 'Wizard of Oz' Show

Local Children Selected for Touring 'Wizard of Oz' Show

The National Tour of “The Wizard of Oz” announced that 12 children from Central Georgia will perform the roles of munchkins in Macon showings of the beloved classic live on stage.

“The Wizard of Oz” will be performing at The Grand Opera House March 15-16 at 7:30 p.m. in downtown Macon.

That is according to a Grand Opera House news release

Macon dance studio Academy of the Performing Arts auditioned, selected and will prepare all 12 munchkins for their choreographed songs and dances in the production. The children will have the opportunity to dance alongside a nationally touring Broadway company and learn valuable, real-world skills while having fun. Owners Sylvia Haynie and Laura Voss, both with 30 years’ experience, are excited to be a part of this production.
