An official at Macon's Herbert Smart Airport says a plane ran off the runway and crashed into the woods Tuesday morning around 10.

Bibb County Sheriff's Office says the plane was piloted by Brian Landers, with co-pilot Joel Perkins, and one passenger; John Dewberry, who also owns the jet.

Becky Beaman, spokeswoman for the Charleston International Airport, says the plane took off from Charleston at 9:24 a.m. She cites the cause of the crash as hydroplaning as it attempted to land at the Macon Downtown Airport.

Beaman says there were three passengers on-board the plane, which is owned by a company registered in Delaware.

The aircraft was described as a Beech Jet 400 Twin Engine plane.

The Macon-Bibb Fire Department and Bibb County Sheriff's Office are on the scene.

13WMAZ talked to Eddie Lamberth, who lives near the airport, and noticed the scene as he was coming home from the grocery store. He said the only reason why he saw it was because somebody was standing by the road.

"You really would have rode right by it and never even knew there was a plane in the ditch," Lamberth said.

Lamberth said he didn't see the plane go into the wooded area just off of Ocmulgee East Boulevard or hear anything. But he said that two were already outside of the plane and that he and few others tried to help the pilot who was still inside.

"The pilot was hung in there," said Lamberth. "He was awake and alert and all of that. We looked to see if we could get him out, but the stick had him pinned in too tight."

A story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitiution said Dewberry, who is on the board of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, was traveling to Macon from his Charleston, S.C., home to help determine the final selections for the hall's 2013 class.

The National Transportation and Safety Board is expected to investigate the crash.
