Bibb Educators Attend Summer Space Camp

As a capstone experience for teachers participating in the Math Science Partnership grant, 18 teachers from Bibb County attended the weeklong Space Camp for Educators in Huntsville, Ala., during the summer.

Throughout the weeklong program, which was held June 6-10, teachers participated in about 45 hours of intensive classroom, laboratory, and training time.

“The teachers were able to participate in a wide variety of activities that used space to teach math and science standards,” said Lynn Janes, the District’s Coordinator of School Improvement for Mathematics. “All activities were correlated with national science, math and reading standards. The teachers will be able to use these activities to spark interest in math and science in their students.”

National History Day State Competition Winners Honored

National History Day State Competition winners from Rutland Middle School were recognized for their achievement at the Board Meeting. National History Day is an academic competition in which students conduct extensive research on a historical topic of their choice based on the year’s theme.

Through their research, students must compile analysis and conclusions about the historical significance of the event they have chosen into one of five categories: papers, websites, exhibits, performances, and documentaries. Students compete in National History Day on local, state, and national levels.

Weiss was first honored this year by the Georgia Marketing Educators’ Association as the Outstanding New Career and Technical Teacher. The award recognizes teachers with at least three but no more than five years of teaching experience “who have made significant contributions toward innovative, unique and novel programs and have shown a professional commitment early in their careers,” according to the application. The award placed Weiss in the running for his next honor, which was the GACTE award he won in July. Weiss will now go on to represent Georgia in the Association for Career and Technical Education Region II competition.
